Cold Plunge vs. Cryo
When the topic of cold exposure therapy comes up, people usually ask what’s the difference between cold water immersion (cold plunge tubs) and cryotherapy? We think Laird Hamilton said it best, “Go in an ice tub because cyro’s a cakewalk compared to a real ice tub.” If you’ve tried both therapies you understand. When we evaluated which of the two to bring into REBOOT, it was a hands down decision as we found cold water immersion to have the most health benefits. Here are the top 3 reasons why we believe cold water immersion is more effective than cryotherapy.
Cold water immersion transfers heat away from the body more effectively than air which increases norepinephrine in your body 6x faster than cryotherapy. Norepinephrine is a hormone and neurotransmitter responsible for increased mood, alertness, reaction time, thermogenesis, fat loss, pain relief and anti-inflammatories. This alone was enough to sway us to a cold plunge tub.
Cryotherapy has a time limit of approximately 3 minutes per use and most limit you to 1-2 sessions a day. We recommend 2-3 cycles in our cold plunge tub in between infrared sauna sessions. Couple that with the fact that each cycle is more effective in producing norepinephrine and you have a clear winner.
Cold water immersion is a more cost effective solution. When we save, so do our clients. Our Founder’s Membership which includes unlimited contrast exposure therapy, Normatec compression massage therapy, Breath+Mobility classes and access on online training costs less than 10 cryo sessions. No brainer right?
